The arc

Sustainability, in its current vocabulary, is a planetary calculation. How much carbon. How much water. How much biodiversity. The numbers are local. The horizon is at most a few human generations.

The cosmic-sustainability horizon raises the time scale by twelve orders of magnitude. A Type I civilization manages a planet for thousands of years. A Type II manages a star for billions. A Type III manages a galaxy for the lifetime of its dimmest stars — trillions of years. At every level above today, the operative question is the same as it is today: which inputs can be replenished, which outputs can be absorbed, and which substrate is being thinned without anyone watching?

The deep insight, often lost in the climate debate, is that sustainability is not the opposite of growth. It is the prerequisite for very long growth. The economies that learn to internalize their externalities are the ones that get to keep growing. The civilizations that learn to internalize their cosmic externalities — entropy, waste heat, the slow contamination of nearby vacuum — are the ones that get to last.

Metrics that mark progress

  1. 01Global CO₂ flux (target: net-zero by 2050, net-negative by 2100)全球碳通量(目标:2050 净零,2100 净负)
  2. 02Energy capture efficiency (current ~0.001% of solar flux; Type I = ~100%)能量捕获效率(现 ~0.001% 太阳辐照;I 型 ~100%)
  3. 03Closed-loop ratio: % of material throughput that re-enters production (target: 90%+ by 2100)闭环率:进入再生产的物料百分比(目标:2100 年前 90%+)

What stands in the way阻力何在

  1. 01Discount rates: any society that values next year much more than next century underinvests in its own substrate.
  2. 02Coordination: planetary externalities require planetary contracts; we have only national ones.
  3. 03Entropy: every long-run civilization eventually has to negotiate with the second law.

What to do with this如何在日常中运用

"Make at least one decision a year on a time horizon longer than your own life. A tree you will not sit under. A debt you will not collect. A document you will not be alive to read. Long horizons are habits; they have to be practiced."
